According to the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers, a geriatric care manager is a health and human services specialist who helps families who are caring for older adults. They could be a social worker, nurse, gerontologist or have a health-related background with a focus on aging and elder care issues.

A relatively new profession which traces its roots back to the mid-1980s, the national association now has about 2,000 members, and those numbers continue to grow.

"Actually, we're growing all over the country, not just Florida," said Linda Cramer, president of the Florida Geriatric Care Management Association. "It's not a very old profession. As we grow in numbers people go, 'Oh my gosh, I didn't know you existed.' People are realizing we're here and what we can do."

...in Florida, especially, Cramer said geriatric care managers are in demand because many families of older adults live elsewhere. "We are the ones on guard," Cramer said. "We're the safety net."
